NECEC commends the Baker Administration for its recent announcement that the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources’ (DOER) will set 2020 targets for energy storage systems in Massachusetts.
“The Baker Administration has helped kick-start the burgeoning energy storage industry in Massachusetts with this decision to set an energy storage target for the Commonwealth,” said NECEC President Peter Rothstein. “NECEC and our member companies look forward to working with DOER to put Massachusetts on the map as a national leader in energy storage, and leveraging strong targets to bring significant value to Massachusetts through monetary savings, high-priority energy and environmental policy impacts, grid management and resiliency benefits, and economic growth.”
In July 2016 the Massachusetts legislature passed, and in August 2016, Governor Charlie Baker signed into law An Act Relative to Energy Diversity, which directed DOER to determine if energy storage goals were appropriate for Massachusetts. This followed the Baker Administration’s $10 million Energy Storage Initiative, announced in May 2015. As part of that initiative, DOER published State of Charge, which examines the policy options and other opportunities to support energy storage deployment in Massachusetts.
NECEC submitted comments to DOER in regard to its consideration of an energy storage target, noting that energy storage offers a myriad of benefits to customers, system owners, and the grid. NECEC’s comments can be read here.
